Love the fit and feel much better than Altra.
It’s early, I know, but I love these shoes!First of all, they are really nice looking. The maroon is a deep, rich color. I debated about getting the lilac pair but I’m glad I didn’t.Second, they feel terrific! I have been running exclusively in Altras since 2013 but haven’t loved them for the last four or five years. The issues I have with Altra are fit. The wide toe box has narrowed through the years, but the inner toe got longer. The long toe box has caused me to trip on a few occasions, while the narrow part across the width of my foot caused some numbness from a neuroma.Whitin seems to have rectified both of those issues by making the toe box very similar to how Altras used to fit. I have run three times in them, once for 5.5 miles and I road run. My feet felt great throughout. I couldn’t be happier with their performance so far.At $43, there is a bit of a trade off though. The vinyl along the laces looks sort of cheap and the foam bottom is a little harder and a bit noisier than my Altra Escalantes. I did, however, find a review online that said they tend to soften up over time. Also, I switched the insoles with my retired Escalantes for more cushion. The laces are really too long but I plan to buy elastic lock laces anyway so that’s a non-issue for me.In all, even if these shoes don’t go 400 miles like the Altras, I could buy three pair for the price of one pair of Altras, and I like the fit of Whitin far better.I hope this review will help other runners because I debated about getting them with so few specific running reviews. If you’re on the fence, and already run in zero drop Altras, I recommend giving them a try.

Fit like shoes are supposed to fit!
First things first as there’s a lot of misconception out there on ‘barefoot shoes’FYI- This particular style is not Barefoot or a Minimalist shoe! Please understand that before you order. And .. use their size guide and measure your feet as recommended in order to get the proper fit.Barefoot shoes:-zero drop-No cushioning; very thin sole for maximum ground feel *you can actually feel the ground through your feet.-Minimal protection from ground hazards-Extremely flexible to mimic barefoot movement-Designed to REPLICATE the experience of being barefoot-wide toe box and more natural fit to match the natural foot.MINIMALIST Shoes:- zero-8mm drop-minimal cushioning vs NO cushioning like the barefoot-flexible, but a slightly thicker sole then a barefoot-it sits between a barefoot and traditional shoes. This particular style (zero drop wide toe box road shoe) fits the foot as shoes should fit the foot, with a natural wide toe box. The shoe itself is not a wide fit.It has a very stiff sole and insole even compared to my New Balance zero drop walking sneaker (minimalist and barefoot shoes do not have stiff soles)While the base of the sole is non slip it’s a harder material that does not appear to absorb shock. If you’re looking for a shoe to absorb impact on your joints, this may not be the correct shoe.*I am not a runner and never have been, so I am not sure how these would perform for running as they are titled as a roadrunning shoe.Very attractive shoe and the material is a breathable fabric. It’s not designed for outdoor cold winter weather.I purchased these with the intent to wear them as a zero drop training shoe at F45 however the insole and outer soul is stiff that it may not absorb impact, I prefer to slightly feel the ground doing weight lifting / squat type movements. With that being said, I will stick with Merrell Minimalist shoes for training and will try these on the pickleball court.Update 28days later:I find the shoe very comfortable for walking and everyday wear!I did wear the shoe during an F45 workout and I didn’t like it. There was no lateral support from the arch to the toe box, the soul was too thick putting my feet too high from the ground which resulted in me not having much control and the shoe did not flex the way I prefer for doing lunges.

“Wide toe box” should not be synonymous with “wide shoe size”
One thing I wish Whiten and other shoe brands that make “wide toe box” shoes would get clear on: “wide toe boxes” are not just of benefit to people with “wide feet” who wear “wide shoe sizes”. Those of us with medium/regular or other foot widths need shoes with wider toe boxes, too, but WITHOUT HAVING TO BUY SHOES IN “WIDE SHOE SIZES”. HELLO!!!That said, I LOVE shoes with wide toe boxes. They fit your feet more anatomically, and after wearing them, a number of foot and ankle problems I was experiencing just vanished. I don’t understand why the only thing we’ve had to choose from until recently are those awful shoes with pointy toes that cause so many foot problems. I also like the zero drop concept, but I’m not much of a fan of the barefoot concept. So I decided to try this style of shoe for everyday wear and just walking. This shoe style, though it supposedly is made in a medium width shoe size”, still is made for pretty wide feet. I have medium width feet. So these shoes are VERY wide at the toe for me, but since the shoe fits well otherwise, I’ll be keeping them.I inadvertently ordered a size larger than I intended, but now I’m glad I did. While this shoe has a thicker sole than the “barefoot” shoes, there still is not much cushioning for shock absorption or much in the way of arch support. Frankly I don’t know how they can market this as a “running shoe”. But once I added an insert with some heel cushioning and arch support, the shoe is much nicer to wear and walk in, and it conforms much better to the shape of my foot.I will probably buy another pair of these when they wear out. But seriously, I wish Whiten (and others) would also offer more of their “wide toe box” shoe styles in medium width shoe sizes.

Stiff until you wear them for a few hours or 1 mile walk
These cute shoes are very comfortable. When they arrived I was uncertain if I would keep them because they were really stiff. I wore them in my house for an hour and they began to feel more comfortable to the point I was willing to gamble going for a walk outside knowing I couldn’t return them. After my mile walk they felt great and are very cool in my hot climate. I have been using them for about 3 weeks on my daily 2 mile walk and really like them!

very low cut, my toes cannot go in at all eventhough it is the right size. Only suitable for skinny feet

Have not given them a good workout yet but very comfortable. I have plantar fasciitis and bunions and they are very comfortable.

Mom needed a wider toe box runner. She wears these all the time. Good value for the price.

UPDATE: these shoes are horrible. My feet are in agony whenever I walk too fast or wear them for too long. They are no longer zero drop because the outsoles are so soft there’s almost no tread left in the forefoot in only 1½ months. Absolute trash.I’ll update review accordingly, but at first I thought I had got the wrong size, and almost ordered another pair while starting a return for these. Then I remember the company saying to remove the insole if the fit doesn’t feel right. Because it fit in length, but the width and height felt wrong. Had nothing to lose, removed the insoles. What a DIFFERENCE! My toes no longer feel like they’re being crushed, my feet don’t feel like they’re being strangled. I am coming to these shoes from VFF toe shoes, so I know I had to bring down my expectations for roominess a bit. Having said that, much better than a regular shoeI’ll have to walk some more without the insoles, to see if it’s still on comfortable as my literal barefoot shoes. Which took away my feet, knee, and hip pain. Hopefully these do the same while giving some protection from the rain and any stray needles.
